How to Identify Pregnancy Symptoms in Dogs

If you are not sure if your dog is pregnant or not, there are some symptoms that you can look for to help find out if she is or not. One of the first things that you want to know is if she has been in heat recently or not. If your dog is between six months and sixteen months, chances are that she has been in heat.

Not all dogs experience the same symptoms or all of the symptoms, so it is important to know what to watch for:

  • Anything that indicates your dog is acting differently. Most of the time you will notice a significant change in her behavior.

  • Many dogs experience a drop in their appetite during the first few weeks of their pregnancy, they may become reluctant to eating and do not want to eat anything at all. This will change eventually, and they will later experience an increase in appetite.

  • Some dogs may start vomiting during the first few weeks of pregnancy. They can vomit anything from clear mucous to food. This does not always occur in the morning hours, and can occur at any time of day.

  • Most dogs will show indications of breast development after they have been in heat; however, breast growth is also an indication of pregnancy.

  • Most dogs will begin to spend a lot of time resting or sleeping.

  • There may be discharge, but if the discharge is foul or brownish in color, or green this could be an indication of a problem in the pregnancy.

  • Growth in the abdomen usually does not occur until mid-pregnancy.

  • You will be able to feel the puppies in late pregnancy by placing your hands gently on the abdomen of the dog. Don’t be alarmed if you do not feel movement, it probably means that the puppies are asleep.
