It’s easier than you might think and with a few tips to get started, your cat’s behavior will improve in a short amount of time.
There are several methods to use in training your cat to behave better at home. We’ll cover a few good tactics here.
Before we begin, it’s important that you do not strike your cat or punish the animal in a physical manner if it misbehaves or does not take to the training at first. If you do, all you will teach your cat is to fear you, not listen to you. And, you will hurt it in the process.
So, here’s our first tip. Use the element of surprise to your advantage.
Cats do not like to be surprised and, as a result, you can use that as a training tool. Clapping, spraying water with a small bottle or making sharp vocal noises can surprise your animal.
Many people turn to the spray bottle method so that weird and loud noises are not generating from their homes or apartments all day long. You can buy a spray bottle at your local dollar store. Fill it up and keep it handy for when your animal misbehaves.
Make the noise or spray the animal as it embarks on its bad behavior. Don’t wait until he or she has finished. The animal won’t make the connection. Doing it repeatedly every time the animal starts the behavior is vital.
A good training tip to stop your animal from biting is to use your hand as a “bite shield” and to push the cat away in the process.
When your cat attempts to bite you or someone else, move the palm of your hand over the face of your pet and push it away. Your hand is much bigger than your cat’s mouth and it won’t be able to bite you in this position.
As you push the animal away, it will send the message that this behavior is not wanted. As you push, speak a firm negative, like “No!” Do this every time in the same manner.
It’s important to note that this is a gentle but firm push away, not a hit or strike. Nor is it a forceful push that would send the cat sprawling and possibly injure the animal.
A third tip is to train your animal to avoid bad behaviors as young as possible. It’s easier to train when they’re young, rather than when they become adults.
